Q1. What does it mean if you test positive for Lyme antibodies?
A1. A positive result means that Borrelia antibodies were found and that you may have had or have Lyme disease. False-positive results sometimes do occur. This means the test could say you have the infection when you don't.
Q2. How long does it take for a Lyme titer to be positive?
A2. But if you had symptoms for less than 30 days before you gave your blood sample, you may need to have another Lyme disease test. That's because it may take a few weeks for your body to make enough antibodies to show up on a test. If your test was done too soon, you could be infected even though your test was negative.
Q3. Do Lyme antibodies protect you?
A3. Because the immune system continues to make the antibodies for months or years after an infection is gone, your blood test will remain positive after the bacteria are no longer present. Unfortunately, these antibodies don't reliably prevent re-infection should you be bitten by another infected tick.
Q4. Can Lyme antibodies go away?
A4. Both IgM and IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi may persist for months to years after successful treatment of Lyme borreliosis. Consequently, a single serum sample with antibodies against B. burgdorferi must always be carefully evaluated and correlated to clinical symptoms.
Q5. Can you test positive for Lyme twice?
A5. Yes, you can get Lyme disease twice - or more. This is different from being newly infected by other tick-borne illnesses, such as Ehrlichia or Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever, which can present with Lyme-like symptoms but are actually caused by different bacteria than the Lyme disease bacteria.
