Q1. How long do toxoplasmosis antibodies last?
A1. However, up to 9-27% of those who have been infected with Toxoplasma have detectable IgM antibodies that may remain for 2 years or more. Toxoplasma IgG appears approximately 2 weeks after infection and peaks at 3 months. IgG antibodies then persist for life.
Q2. How do you test for toxoplasmosis antibodies?
A2. The toxoplasma blood test looks for antibodies in the blood to a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Blood is drawn from a vein (venipuncture), usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.
Q3. What does positive Toxoplasma IgG antibody mean?
A3. A positive Toxoplasma IgG result is indicative of current or past infection with Toxoplasma gondii. A single positive Toxoplasma IgG result should not be used to diagnose recent infection. Equivocal Toxoplasma IgG results may be due to very low levels of circulating IgG during the acute stage of infection.
Q4. What is the range for toxoplasmosis antibody?
A4. 7.9 AU/mL or less: Not Detected. 8.0-9.9 AU/mL: Indeterminate - Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful. 10.0 AU/mL or greater: Detected - Significant level of Toxoplasma gondii IgM antibody detected and may indicate a current or recent infection.
Q5. Is toxoplasmosis immunity lifelong?
A5. It is believed that infection by Toxoplasma gondii triggers a lifelong protective immunity due to the persistence of parasitic cysts which induce immunoprotecting against reinfection.
