FAQ

Q1. How common is FIPV?
A1. Feline infectious peritonitis Virus (FIPV) is a common disease and a frequent reason for referral; approximately 1 of every 200 new feline cases presented to American veterinary teaching hospitals represents a cat with FIPV.

Q2. What are the problems with FIPV?
A2. Early signs of FIPV can vary but often include a rising and falling fever, loss of appetite, and energy loss. As time goes by, infected cats may have more FIPV symptoms that depend on the form of FIP. FIP comes in a "dry" form and a "wet" form. Infected cats can have symptoms of only one form or a combination of both.

Q3. How long can a cat survive FIPV?
A3. Except in rare cases, wet FIP is fatal within about five weeks of diagnosis. The dry form is equally deadly but affected cats may survive for a few months.

Q4. What medication is used for FIPV in cats?
A4. The current gold standard is remdesivir (IV), followed by SC injections and finally oral GS-441524 (the duration of the treatment is 12 weeks) to avoid relapses. However, adjustments in protocols are being made and treatment may need to be modified to the individual cat and client.

Q5. Should cats get FIPV vaccine?
A5. The Task Force lists the feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) vaccine as not generally recommended. This vaccine is labeled for administration from 16 weeks of age, whereas many kittens become infected with coronaviruses well before this age. It also contains a serotype II strain of FIP virus.
